New Delhi, 7th Jan: The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has launched a four-day Sports Sciences Workshop for combat sports coaches at its Sports Science Division in the national capital, aimed at strengthening the integration of sports science into daily coaching practices.

Coaches from Boxing, Wrestling and Judo are participating in the immersive programme, which focuses on applying scientific principles to modern training methodologies. The workshop places special emphasis on functional strength training, plyometrics, periodised resistance training programmes and exercise physiology relevant to elite performance.

Brig. (Dr.) Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, Director-cum-Head of SAI’s Sports Science Division, said that the initiative aligns with the vision of Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya to ensure sports science principles are embedded into day-to-day training routines to improve India’s medal prospects.

The programme also covers injury prevention and management, particularly shoulder-related conditions common in combat sports, through scientific warm-up protocols, load management strategies and stability training. Dedicated modules on sports nutrition, recovery science, anti-doping awareness and applied sports psychology reinforce a holistic approach to athlete development.

The inaugural session was addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Deepak Joshi, Director of the Sports Injury Centre (SIC), Safdarjung Hospital, who highlighted the importance of coordinated sports science and sports medicine interventions.

In a major step towards strengthening athlete care, SAI and the Sports Injury Centre at Safdarjung Hospital are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure priority treatment, clinical management and seamless rehabilitation for Indian athletes, enabling their safe return to competition.
