Hyderabad, 7th Dec: A new cultural collective, Roopak Hyderabad, has formally launched with a theatrical event celebrating two Bengali literary classics, marking a renewed push to promote Bangla theatre in the IT city.

The launch event at Rangabhoomi Spaces featured staged presentations of Pratham Partha by Buddhadeb Basu and Bhushondir Mathe by Parashuram. The performances marked the group’s transition from informal rehearsals, active since 2013, to a structured platform dedicated to meaningful theatre. The evening drew an enthusiastic audience across linguistic backgrounds, with Telugu students also contributing through cultural performances, adding a cross-cultural element to the programme.

Founder Shuddhasattwa Das said the idea began as an unorganised gathering of drama enthusiasts seeking to preserve their cultural roots. “We started simply to keep our language and theatre culture alive. Theatre remains the most powerful medium to connect the next generation with their roots,” he said. He added that Roopak Hyderabad will continue as a non-profit platform and will soon offer acting workshops for children to support formal learning and introduce young participants to stagecraft.

While the group’s primary focus is on Bangla theatre, the interest shown by non-Bengali audiences has motivated the team to explore bilingual or Hindi productions in the future.
