New Delhi, 27th June: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday addressed the MSME Day celebrations in New Delhi, underlining the crucial role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in driving India’s economic development and fostering inclusive growth.
In her address, President Murmu described MSMEs as a strong pillar of the Indian economy, stating that a robust MSME ecosystem is not just important but essential for sustainable economic progress. She highlighted the sector’s contribution to GDP, employment generation—particularly in rural and backward areas—and grassroots innovation.
“The MSME sector empowers weaker sections, decentralises development and plays a vital role in inclusive growth,” she said.
The President also acknowledged the challenges confronting MSMEs, including limited access to finance, competition from large corporations, lack of advanced technology, scarcity of raw materials, skilled labour shortages, market limitations, and delayed payments.
Government Measures
Highlighting the Government of India’s initiatives to support the sector, President Murmu referred to the revised classification criteria, enhanced credit availability, and mandates encouraging central ministries and PSUs to procure at least 35% of their annual needs from micro and small enterprises.
She appreciated efforts under schemes like the PM Vishwakarma Yojana for skill development and expressed confidence in the recently launched Online Dispute Resolution Portal, which is expected to help MSMEs tackle payment delays effectively.
Innovation, Women Participation, and Sustainability
Calling innovation essential for the sustainability of MSMEs, the President encouraged enterprises to develop local solutions from local resources, enabling cost-effective responses to regional challenges.
Welcoming the increased participation of women in the MSME sector, she urged young women to become entrepreneurs and contribute to national development through self-reliance and enterprise.
President Murmu also drew attention to the environmental footprint of the sector. “MSMEs are responsible for a large share of energy consumption and emissions. Promoting green technology is the need of the hour,” she said, adding that doing so would enhance competitiveness and support India’s climate goals.
The President concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the MSME sector and ensuring its role in building a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative economy.
