Rape Convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Walks Out of Jail on 20-Day Parole

Chandigarh, 2nd October. Dera Sacha Sauda chief and rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh walked out of Sunaria Jail in Haryana’s Rohtak on Wednesday after being granted a 20-day parole. Singh, serving a 20-year sentence for raping two disciples, will stay at the Dera ashram in Barnawa, Uttar Pradesh, during this period.

An official confirmed that Singh was released under tight security and that the Haryana government has imposed strict conditions on his parole. He is prohibited from participating in any election-related activities, making public speeches, or staying in Haryana during the parole period. This comes ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5, with results to be declared on October 8.

Singh had sought parole before the elections, and his request was forwarded to the Haryana Chief Electoral Officer in view of the Model Code of Conduct. The opposition has previously criticized his release during elections, citing political motivations. In August, Singh was granted a 21-day furlough, and he was also released two weeks before the Punjab Assembly polls in 2022.

While Singh has faced multiple convictions, including for the murder of a journalist and a former sect manager, his release on parole and furloughs continues to stir controversy.
