New Delhi, 16th March: Polling for the biennial elections to 37 seats of the Rajya Sabha is being held today, with voting scheduled from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM across several states, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The Commission said that counting of votes will begin at 5:00 PM immediately after the completion of polling.
The biennial elections are held to fill seats of members of the Upper House of Parliament whose terms are set to expire. Members of the Rajya Sabha are elected by the elected members of the respective state legislative assemblies through a system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.
The Election Commission has issued detailed guidelines and arrangements to ensure smooth and transparent voting across states where elections are taking place.
Officials said necessary preparations, including designated polling booths within state assemblies and deployment of election officers, have been made to conduct the process efficiently.
The outcome of the polling will determine the new composition of the Rajya Sabha as several political parties seek to strengthen their representation in the Upper House of Parliament.
