New Delhi, 5th Feb. Jailed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh will not be able to take his oath for his second term in Rajya Sabha today.
Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has refused to allow Singh to take the oath, stating that the House’s privileges committee is currently investigating the matter, according to news agency ANI.
The senior AAP leader was suspended from Rajya Sabha in July of last year for disregarding the Chair’s directives. He was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in October on charges of money laundering. However, a Delhi court has granted him permission to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha MP today, despite being in judicial custody.
The Enforcement Directorate, which is currently investigating the money trail in the now-defunct Delhi liquor policy, has informed the court that Mr. Singh was involved in a conspiracy to receive kickbacks from liquor groups.
Last month, Singh was reelected unopposed for his second term in the Upper House of Parliament. He initially became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2018. In addition to Singh, AAP’s Swati Maliwal and Narain Dass Gupta were also elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha. These two MPs have already taken their oaths in the House on January 31.
