Chennai, 25th Oct: The Ashram Matriculation School, run by superstar Rajinikanth’s wife Latha Rajinikanth, was locked by its landlord last night over alleged unpaid rent of ₹2 crore.
The school management has denied the allegations and announced plans to sue the landlord for defamation.
In a statement, the management said, “Taking the law into his hands and without any information, once again, the landlord has created immense agony to the school, children, parents and management today.” The school has decided to vacate the premises and has temporarily shifted its 300 students to another campus.
The dispute comes amid Rajinikanth’s increasing public presence in Tamil Nadu politics, with speculation continuing about a potential political launch.
The school claims the landlord has been charging “exorbitant” rent and making “unsubstantiated allegations,” stating, “It is not just about the rent but about their exploitation of the situation and asking for unfair, unreasonable and exorbitant increment in rentals for which we have been negotiating.”
The Ashram School, recognized by the government in 1996, faced earlier eviction proceedings in 2011, compounded by state rules requiring a 30-year lease for recognition renewal. In 2019, the landlord allegedly demanded a steep rent increase, which the school challenged. The institution also faced protests in December over delayed salaries to drivers, attributed to a cash crunch post-demonetization.
