New Delhi, 29th Sept: Senior IAS officer Rajeev Verma has been appointed the new Chief Secretary of Delhi, with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs clearing his posting. A 1992-batch officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, Verma will assume office on October 1, succeeding Dharmendra, who retires at the end of September.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, the 58-year-old Verma holds a Computer Science degree from Roorkee and an M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). He has extensive administrative experience, having served in Delhi and at the Centre.

Verma previously held key positions in the capital, including Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Finance (2018–2022), Principal Commissioner of Housing and Urban Affairs at the Delhi Development Authority (2017–2018), and Joint Secretary in the Defence Ministry (2013–2017). He also headed Delhi’s Transport Department earlier in his career.

Officials note his deep understanding of Delhi’s governance challenges, from urban planning to finance. His immediate priorities include cleaning and rejuvenating the Yamuna River, a task under close scrutiny as the city braces for winter pollution. Other key focus areas will be traffic congestion, waste management, water supply, and public transport.

With the BJP in control of the Centre, Delhi administration, and Municipal Corporation, Verma is expected to operate in a more coordinated political environment than his predecessors, enabling him to focus on governance and long-term infrastructure planning.
