Guwahati, 16th July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dismissed the political relevance of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, stating that he no longer considers Gandhi significant after a string of electoral defeats.

“Now that he has lost the election, why should I spend my time on him? He is not that important anymore. He kept losing a series of elections. So why should I waste my time on him?” Sarma remarked when asked about Gandhi’s ongoing visit to Assam.

Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, is currently on his first visit to the state after Gaurav Gogoi took over as Assam Congress chief. The duo is scheduled to address a party workers’ meeting in Guwahati and a public rally in Chaygaon, about 40 km away.

The visit is part of the Congress’s renewed outreach efforts in Assam ahead of the 2026 assembly polls, following its diminishing presence in the state since 2016.

“This visit is part of the nationwide tour of the two top leaders. It will boost party morale,” said Gaurav Gogoi, who also serves as Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
