New Delhi, 26th July. Delhi Police detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and 17 of his party colleagues after they staged a protest and marched to Rashtrapati Bhavan to submit a memorandum on Tuesday.

“India has turned into a police state, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behaving like a king,” Gandhi said just before being detained on a road near Vijay Chowk here.

Gandhi earlier sat on the road during the protest. The police officers had a difficult time convincing him to leave because it was a high-security zone and Section 144 was in effect.

When Gandhi refused to listen to their arguments, he was taken away in a police van.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh later tweeted, “All Congress MPs stopped at Vijay Chowk and prevented from marching to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Forcibly arrested. Now we are in police buses being taken to a place only the PM and HM know where.”

“We were going to Rashtrapati Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the President against misuse of central agencies,” said another party leader, “but we were detained and are now being taken to Kingsway Camp Police Lines.”

Meanwhile, at the AICC headquarters, there was commotion between youth Congress leaders and workers and security personnel.

In an interview with the media, Congress leader Sachin Pilot stated, “Democracy has been choked because the government is not allowing discussion on any issue or peaceful protests.”
