New Delhi, 13th Aug: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has alleged that some BJP MPs threatened him, saying he would “meet the same fate” as his grandmother, former prime minister Indira Gandhi. The alleged threats were made in response to his remarks against Vinayak Damodar Savarkar during the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in 2022.
The allegations were presented in a Maharashtra court as part of a defamation case filed against Gandhi by Nashik resident Devendra Bhutada. The court had granted him bail in the case on July 24.
According to Gandhi’s lawyer, Milind Pawar, a separate application was filed in court to place these developments on judicial record. The lawyer stated that during a recent Parliament session, a verbal exchange over the word “Hindutva” took place between the Prime Minister and Rahul Gandhi, followed by the threats from two BJP MPs.
Pawar said the threats included telling Gandhi to “step aside” and labeling him as the “biggest terrorist.” He expressed concern for Mr. Gandhi’s safety, citing the “genealogy” of those who threatened him and the fact that they are “Savarkar’s followers.”
“We felt that since this case is pending before this court for evidence, and given the entire genealogy in question… he could be betrayed or harmed,” the lawyer stated. The court has accepted the application, and the next hearing is scheduled for September 10.
