New Delhi, 7th Aug: Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India soon, National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval announced from Moscow on Thursday. While Doval did not specify the exact dates, Russian news agency Interfax reported that the visit is likely to take place later this year, possibly in late August.
“We have got a special, long relationship, and we value this relationship,” Doval said. “We are very excited and delighted to learn about the visit of President Putin to India. I think the dates are almost finalised now.”
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between New Delhi and Washington. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The US President has also threatened to hit purchasers of Russian oil with secondary tariffs unless Moscow agrees to a ceasefire in Ukraine by Friday.
Since the start of the war nearly four years ago, India has become one of the biggest importers of Russian oil, with bilateral trade between the two countries reaching new heights.
The Kremlin also confirmed that a meeting between President Putin and President Trump is being scheduled for the coming days, with a venue already agreed upon. The meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place ahead of Putin’s visit to India.
