Chandigarh, 18th July: The Punjab government has increased the property tax levied on residential and commercial properties across the state by 5 percent. An official notification regarding this decision has been issued, and the new tax rates became effective from April 1, 2025.
Government officials stated that this decision was made in response to a decline in revenue for urban local bodies, including municipal corporations and nagar parishads. Under the revised rates, both residential and commercial properties will now be subject to an additional 5 percent tax compared to existing rates.
A government spokesperson explained that the increase aims to facilitate the development of the state’s urban infrastructure and improve the quality of services provided. However, they also clarified that despite the hike, property tax rates in Punjab remain considerably lower compared to many other states in the country.
