New Delhi, 23rd Dec: A massive protest erupted outside the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital following the brutal lynching of a Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district last week. The demonstration was led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, condemning alleged atrocities against Hindus and attacks on religious places in Bangladesh.
Tensions escalated as protesters pushed through security barricades, clashing with police deployed in large numbers. Chanting slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, “Yunus Sarkar Hosh Mein Aao” and “Hindu Hatiya Band Karo”, demonstrators demanded accountability from Bangladeshi authorities and protection for minorities. At least two layers of barricades were reportedly breached before police managed to regain control.
Several protesters carried placards seeking justice for Dipu Das, while effigies of Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus were burnt during the agitation. “If we don’t raise our voice today, tomorrow everyone will become another Dipu,” a protester said, reflecting the anger within the crowd.
Delhi Police detained several demonstrators to disperse the gathering and restore order. Security agencies had already been on high alert, deploying police and paramilitary forces with multi-layered barricading around the high commission to prevent any untoward incident.
Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was lynched to death and his body set on fire in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, on December 18 over alleged blasphemy. The incident triggered widespread outrage, with Bangladeshi authorities arresting at least 12 people so far in connection with the murder.
Earlier, Bangladesh expressed concern over incidents targeting its diplomatic establishments in India, including vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri and the protest in New Delhi. Summoning the Indian High Commissioner, Bangladesh urged India to ensure the safety and security of its missions.
India, however, dismissed allegations of inadequate security, stating that the protest in New Delhi was brief and posed no threat to diplomatic personnel. The row underscores growing international concern over minority safety in Bangladesh following the killing of the Hindu youth.
