Mumbai, 2nd Aug. Nitin Chandrakant Desai, a noted Bollywood production designer, was found dead in his studio in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Wednesday, the police said.
According to officials, Desai died by suicide at the age of 58.
Desai was found hanging in his Karjat studio, according to police sources. The cops were informed and rushed to the location. An official told news agency PTI that an investigation into Desai’s death is currently proceeding from all perspectives.
Desai began his career as an assistant art director on the television film Tamas (1987), which he began on January 25, 1965, in Dapoli, Maharashtra. Later, he worked as an assistant art director on television shows like Kabir (1988-1990) and Chanakya (1991), before making his independent art direction debut on Chanakya in 1991.
Desai continued to work on television shows such as Bharat Ek Khoj (1992-1993), Kora Kagaz (1993), and Swabhimaan (1995-1996). With the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), he made his Bollywood debut as an art director. Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002), Swades (2004), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) are among his other successful Bollywood films.
Desai’s work has been lauded by both critics and audiences. He won four National Film Awards for Best Art Direction and three Filmfare Awards for Best Art Direction. In 2016, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.
Desai founded ND Studios in Karjat, Maharashtra, a film and television production center, and produced the film Desh Devi (2002). His sets were noted for their intricate layout and historical realism, resulting in some of Bollywood’s most iconic and memorable scenes.
