Pride and Pain: Wife of Late Captain Anshuman Singh Receives Kirti Chakra

In a poignant ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Smriti, the wife of late Captain Anshuman Singh of the Army Medical Corps, bravely accepted India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, the Kirti Chakra, on his behalf. Captain Singh, who was tragically Killed in Action last year while rescuing civilians from a devastating fire, was honored posthumously for his exceptional courage and selflessness.In an emotional video shared by the Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Smriti recounted the last conversation she had with her husband, remembering his words, “I would die with a brass on my chest. I would not die an ordinary death.” She spoke of their journey as soulmates, from their first meeting in college to maintaining a long-distance relationship for eight years before finally marrying.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, captured the heartbreaking moment as Smriti, in tears, described the shock and disbelief upon receiving the news of her husband’s demise. Despite the pain, she expressed gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon him with the Kirti Chakra, acknowledging his sacrifice for others.

At the award ceremony, held on Friday and presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, Smriti appeared in a white saree, accompanied by her mother-in-law, Manju Singh. The Rashtrapati Bhavan, in a Twitter post, praised Captain Anshuman Singh for his bravery and highlighted the sacrifices made by him and other awardees.

President Murmu conferred a total of 10 Kirti Chakras, honoring individuals from the Army and paramilitary forces who displayed exceptional valor and courage, with seven awards given posthumously. The solemn occasion underscored the sacrifices made by these bravehearts in service to the nation.
