New Delhi, 1st Dec: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday graced the convocation ceremony of the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in the national capital, emphasising India’s expanding global economic role and the growing strength of the footwear sector.
Addressing graduating students, the President said India is steadily becoming more self-reliant, supported by government-led incentives aimed at encouraging investment. She noted that the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has recognised the footwear industry as a ‘Champion Sector’ under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
Highlighting India’s global position, Murmu said the country ranks second worldwide in footwear production and consumption. She pointed out that in 2024–25, India’s footwear exports crossed USD 2.5 billion, while imports stood at around USD 680 million — making exports nearly four times higher. The expansion of this sector, she added, will open extensive opportunities for young professionals to become entrepreneurs and generate employment.
The President also welcomed the signing of an MoU between FDDI and the University of Northampton, calling it a step forward in India–UK cooperation under the Free Trade Agreement. She said the focus on sustainable materials and circular economy practices reflects both nations’ commitment to environmental protection.
Murmu urged students to approach their craft with a broad vision — to improve people’s comfort and health through better footwear design, contribute to job creation, uplift those left behind in the development journey, support India’s export strength, represent India globally with quality products and help advance the national goal of a self-reliant India.
