New Delhi, 9th Dec: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday presented the National Handicrafts Awards for the years 2023 and 2024 at a ceremony in New Delhi, celebrating the craftsmanship and legacy of India’s artisans.

Addressing the gathering, the President said art has always been a medium through which humanity expresses its memories, experiences and aspirations. She noted that India’s centuries-old handicraft traditions have survived and flourished because of the dedication of artisans who have adapted to changing times while preserving the essence of their craft.

She emphasised that handicrafts are not only an integral part of India’s cultural identity but also a crucial source of livelihood, employing more than 3.2 million people, most of them in rural and remote regions. The sector, she said, promotes inclusive development by decentralising employment and strengthening local economies.

Highlighting its social impact, President Murmu said the handicraft sector has long supported marginalised communities and continues to foster women’s empowerment, with women making up 68% of its workforce. She added that the industry’s reliance on natural and local resources makes it inherently eco-friendly, aligning with global calls for sustainable living.

The President also praised the growing influence of Geographical Indication (GI) tags, which are helping Indian craft traditions gain stronger global recognition. She urged artisans and stakeholders to pursue GI tags for unique products and noted that the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative is further boosting the international profile of regional handicrafts.

Citing the global demand for Indian handmade goods, President Murmu said the sector presents excellent opportunities for young entrepreneurs and designers to build new enterprises rooted in traditional knowledge and innovation.

She concluded by commending artisans for their generational dedication, saying their skill and perseverance have ensured that Indian handicrafts continue to be celebrated across the world.
