New Delhi, 14th Dec: President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu on Sunday presented the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and prizes of the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation in New Delhi on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day.
Addressing the gathering, the President said that energy conservation is the most environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy and has become the most pressing need of the present time. She underlined that conserving energy does not merely mean reducing consumption, but using energy wisely, responsibly and efficiently.
She said that avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances, adopting energy-efficient devices, making use of natural light and ventilation, and embracing solar and renewable energy options help not only in saving energy but also in reducing carbon emissions. Energy conservation, she added, is essential for clean air, safe water sources and a balanced ecosystem, and every unit of energy saved reflects responsibility towards nature and future generations.
Highlighting the role of young people, the President said awareness and active participation of children and youth in energy conservation efforts are crucial for achieving national goals and ensuring sustainable development.
She said access to affordable and clean energy empowers communities, boosts local economies and creates new growth opportunities. Green energy, she noted, is not limited to electricity generation but is also a powerful instrument for empowerment and inclusive development.
The President expressed satisfaction over initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which are helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels. She also referred to policy measures including Renewable Consumption Obligation and Production Linked Incentive schemes to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.
She noted that India’s energy efficiency efforts during 2023–24 led to savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, resulting in major economic savings and a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
Emphasising collective responsibility, the President said participation of every sector and citizen is essential for the success of India’s energy transition. She stressed that behavioural change is crucial to bring energy efficiency across all sectors and linked this approach to India’s civilisational ethos of living in harmony with nature, reflected in the global message of “Lifestyle for Environment – LiFE.”
Appreciating all stakeholders working in the field of energy conservation, the President said their efforts would help secure a healthy and bright future for coming generations. She expressed confidence that with public participation and partnerships, India would continue to play a leading role in global energy conservation and move steadily towards a green future.
