New Delhi, 20th Feb: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, met António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday.
Welcoming the UN chief, President Murmu expressed support for his initiative to establish a global scientific panel on Artificial Intelligence to serve all of humanity. She described the proposal as timely and aligned with the need for inclusive and responsible technological governance.
Secretary-General Guterres appreciated India’s leadership in hosting the AI Impact Summit and acknowledged the country’s long-standing collaboration with the United Nations across multiple sectors.
During the discussions, President Murmu underscored that multilateralism is facing major challenges amid global uncertainties and a widening trust deficit. She emphasized that the existing framework of the UN Security Council must be urgently reformed to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
Calling for a greater voice for the Global South in global decision-making, she stated that comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council is essential to maintain the relevance and effectiveness of the United Nations.
The President also noted that while the ‘UN-80’ initiative provides a useful platform for reforms, the developmental priorities of the Global South must be safeguarded in any restructuring process.
Extending her good wishes to Mr. Guterres for the remainder of his tenure, President Murmu reiterated India’s unwavering support for multilateralism and a strengthened global governance architecture.
