New Delhi, 16th Dec: President of India Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday inaugurated the Param Vir Dirgha at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, marking a solemn tribute to India’s bravest soldiers.
The newly created gallery displays portraits of all 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees, India’s highest military honour bestowed for the most exceptional acts of valour, courage and self-sacrifice in wartime. The Dirgha has been envisioned as a space to educate visitors about the lives, sacrifices and indomitable spirit of India’s war heroes who defended the nation at the cost of their lives.
Significantly, the corridors housing the Param Vir Dirgha earlier displayed portraits of British Aides-de-Camp from the colonial era. Their replacement with portraits of Indian military heroes is being seen as a symbolic step towards discarding colonial imprints and proudly embracing India’s cultural identity, heritage and national ethos.
