Bareilly, 30th June: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday addressed the convocation ceremony of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, stressing the need for animal welfare, biodiversity conservation, and technological advancement in veterinary science.

Speaking at the event, President Murmu highlighted India’s cultural ethos rooted in the belief of divinity in all living beings. “Our ancient philosophy of ‘Ishavasyam Idam Sarvam’ teaches us to see God in every form of life,” she said, adding that stories of gods and sages communicating with animals reflect this worldview.

Expressing concern over the extinction threat faced by various species, the President called for urgent action to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity. She underlined that the coexistence of humans, forests, and animals is essential for the health of the planet. “The COVID-19 pandemic showed us the dangers of a consumption-driven culture that harms not just humans, but the entire ecosystem,” she noted.

The President underscored the rising global relevance of the ‘One Health’ concept, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. She urged IVRI to lead in combating zoonotic diseases and enhancing veterinary care.

Highlighting the role of technology, President Murmu called for the integration of innovations like genome editing, embryo transfer, AI, and big data in veterinary medicine. She encouraged research into affordable and indigenous treatment options that are safe for both animals and humans.

Commending the students for dedicating themselves to the care of voiceless animals, she encouraged them to pursue entrepreneurship and contribute to nation-building through start-ups in animal sciences. “In times of career uncertainty, think about the animals you’ve pledged to serve — it will help guide your path,” she advised.

President Murmu’s address concluded with a call to action for a compassionate and technologically empowered future in veterinary and animal welfare sectors.
