New Delhi, 26th Nov: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday addressed the Constitution Day celebration at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to constitutional values and democratic principles.
Recalling that Constitution Day was instituted in 2015 on the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the President said the decision has proven “truly meaningful,” as it enables citizens—especially the youth—to deepen their understanding of constitutional ideals. She noted that each year, the nation collectively expresses its faith in the Constitution and pays tribute to its makers.
Speaking about India’s parliamentary system, the President said the strong arguments made in the Constituent Assembly for adopting this system remain valid today. Describing Parliament as an institution that reflects the aspirations of the world’s largest democracy, she said it continues to inspire several nations across the globe.
President Murmu emphasised that the Constitution enshrines a vision rooted in social, economic and political justice, along with liberty, equality and fraternity. She expressed satisfaction that Members of Parliament have worked to realise these ideals. She also highlighted India’s rapid economic progress, noting that nearly 250 million people have risen out of poverty, marking one of the most remarkable achievements in economic justice worldwide.
Calling the Constitution “a guiding text for taking the country forward,” the President urged the nation to shed colonial mindsets and adopt a nationalist approach. She cited the implementation of the new criminal justice legislations—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—as steps aligned with this vision, grounded in justice rather than punishment.
She also noted that India’s parliamentary system has grown stronger, with the success of adult franchise earning praise globally. Rising participation of women voters, she said, reflects the country’s deepening democratic consciousness. Citizens from all sections—including youth, farmers, the poor, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and the middle class—continue to strengthen democracy from the Panchayat level to Parliament.
The President underlined that the Directive Principles of State Policy provide essential direction to India’s governance system. Citing Dr. Rajendra Prasad, she said protecting the hard-won independence and making it meaningful for common citizens depends on those implementing the Constitution. She appreciated Parliament for consistently acting in the national interest and improving lives across the country.
Highlighting the contribution of all three pillars of democracy—executive, legislature and judiciary—she said they have collectively ensured stability, growth and support in citizens’ lives. She added that India’s democratic traditions and Constitution will be remembered in “golden letters” in future global studies.
Calling Members of Parliament the “bearers, creators, and witnesses” of India’s constitutional legacy, President Murmu expressed confidence that under Parliament’s guidance, the nation will fulfil its resolve of becoming a developed country.
