Prayagraj, 23rd March: At least five workers are feared dead and nine others injured after a wall of a cold storage facility collapsed in the Phaphamau area of Prayagraj on Monday afternoon, triggering a massive rescue operation.
According to initial reports, around 20 workers were trapped under the debris when the structure gave way. Panic spread in the area after ammonia gas began leaking from the facility soon after the collapse.
District authorities rushed to the site and launched an intensive rescue operation using multiple JCB machines. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also deployed.
So far, nine workers have been rescued from the debris and shifted to Swaroop Rani Hospital, where several are reported to be in critical condition.
While eyewitnesses claimed that five people have died in the incident, officials have not yet confirmed any fatalities.
Police have detained the cold storage manager and some staff members for questioning as part of the investigation.
Senior officials, including Prayagraj Police Commissioner Joginder Kumar and District Magistrate Manish Verma, visited the site and reviewed the ongoing rescue efforts.
The operation is still underway as authorities continue to search for those feared trapped under the rubble.
