New Delhi, 16th Jan: In a significant reshuffle at the top of India’s paramilitary forces, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved new Directors General for the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

According to an official order issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Department of Personnel and Training, the decision follows a proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre and currently Director General of ITBP, has been appointed as the new Director General of BSF. He will assume charge in Level-16 of the pay matrix and will serve in the position until his retirement on September 30, 2030, or until further orders.

In a consequential move, Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, has been appointed as the new Director General of ITBP in Level-17 of the pay matrix. He will remain in the post until his superannuation on October 31, 2026, unless directed otherwise. He replaces Praveen Kumar in the role.

The order, issued on January 14 and signed by Director Sakshi Mittal of the ACC Secretariat, references the Ministry of Home Affairs’ communication dated January 1, 2026.

The leadership changes come at a critical time for India’s border security architecture, with both BSF and ITBP playing crucial roles along sensitive frontiers. The government is expected to rely on the experience of both officers to strengthen operational preparedness and administrative efficiency in the coming years.
