New Delhi, 20th November. Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is set to host the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention from January 8 to 10, 2025, marking a significant moment in India’s engagement with its global diaspora. Celebrated every two years since 2015, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas honors the contributions of overseas Indians to the development of their homeland.

The event, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs, will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora to discuss collaborative initiatives under the theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.”

Historical Significance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed annually on January 9 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 1915 from South Africa. It symbolizes the spirit of transformation and contribution to national development, mirroring the diaspora’s role in India’s global success.

The tradition began in 2003, with the first convention held on January 9 that year. Since its inception, 17 PBD conventions have been organized, with the most recent held in January 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, under the theme, “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal.”

Odisha as the Host for 2025

Bhubaneswar, known for its cultural richness and historical significance, will provide a dynamic platform for the 18th PBD Convention. The city’s modern infrastructure and commitment to heritage preservation make it an ideal venue for engaging with global participants.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik welcomed the announcement, stating, “We are honored to host this prestigious event that strengthens India’s bond with its diaspora. Odisha will showcase its culture, resilience, and vision for the future to the world.”

What to Expect at the 18th PBD Convention

The convention will feature:

  • Panel Discussions: Sessions on technology, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
  • Cultural Showcases: Celebrations of India’s and Odisha’s unique heritage.
  • Awards Ceremony: Recognition of exceptional contributions by members of the diaspora in various fields.

Indian Diaspora: A Pillar of Development

The Indian diaspora, comprising over 32 million people worldwide, plays a critical role in India’s development. Their contributions span sectors such as trade, technology, and diplomacy, with remittances and investments significantly bolstering India’s economy.

Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, highlighted the importance of the diaspora, stating, “The Indian diaspora is not just a global network of communities; it is a force that amplifies India’s voice in the international arena.”

Building Towards a Viksit Bharat

The theme for the 2025 convention, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” aligns with India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. This vision, set during the Amrit Kaal period, emphasizes economic growth, inclusivity, and global partnerships.

As the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention approaches, all eyes will be on Bhubaneswar, where the spirit of unity, collaboration, and innovation will take center stage. The event underscores the indispensable role of the Indian diaspora in shaping a progressive and self-reliant India.

The convention promises to be a landmark occasion, reaffirming the diaspora’s enduring connection to their roots while strengthening their role in India’s development story.
