PM Modi was criticized by Jairam Ramesh for not going to Manipur

New Delhi, 4th Feb. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come under fire from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh for not having visited Manipur yet, accusing the PM of horrendously mistreating the state.

The criticism from Congress General Secretary for Communications comes after Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh met with Amit Shah, the Home Minister, on Saturday. In nine months, there has been no meeting with the PM, who has remained completely silent about Manipur, according to a tweet from Ramesh. The PM can’t and will not travel to Imphal; instead, he is going on a road show in Guwahati. A horrendous betrayal of the Manipur people by the PM!”

In the midst of new violence in the state on Saturday, the chief minister of Manipur met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh tweeted about the visit, saying, “We talked about important issues that affect our state. You may be confident that the Indian government will make some crucial choices that will benefit the people of Manipur.”

Ever since ethnic violence erupted in the state of Manipur, the Congress has been critical of the prime minister for failing to visit the region.

On May 3, 2023, Manipur experienced ethnic violence following a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the majority Meitei community. Since then, the ongoing violence has claimed the lives of over 200 people.
