New Delhi, 23rd March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the Lok Sabha, raising serious concerns over the ongoing West Asia conflict and its wide-ranging impact on India and the global economy.
Describing the situation as “concerning,” the Prime Minister said the crisis has persisted for over three weeks and is affecting economies and lives worldwide. He stressed that a united voice from India’s Parliament is essential at this critical juncture.
Highlighting India’s stakes, Modi noted that nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, while a large number of Indian crew members are employed on commercial ships operating in the region. He also pointed out that vital supplies such as crude oil, gas, and fertilizers pass through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which has become increasingly difficult to navigate amid the conflict.
The Prime Minister assured that the government has taken extensive measures to safeguard Indian citizens abroad. He informed that more than 3.75 lakh Indians have been evacuated safely since the conflict began, including around 1,000 from Iran.
He said Indian missions are working round the clock, with emergency helplines and control rooms set up to assist citizens. “The government is sensitive, vigilant, and ready to provide every assistance,” he stated.
On energy security, Modi underlined that despite disruptions, efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and gas across the country. He highlighted India’s diversification of energy imports from 27 to 41 countries and the development of strategic petroleum reserves to cushion against global shocks.
The Prime Minister also pointed to India’s growing focus on alternative energy, including ethanol blending, renewable power expansion, and electric mobility, as long-term safeguards.
Addressing economic concerns, Modi said the government is working on short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to mitigate the impact across sectors, including agriculture, trade, and industry. He assured that adequate fertilizer and food stocks are being maintained to support farmers and ensure food security.
Reiterating India’s diplomatic stance, the Prime Minister said the country has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the only path forward. “India stands for peace in the interest of humanity,” he said, urging all parties to resolve the conflict through peaceful means.
He also cautioned against misinformation, black-marketing, and hoarding, directing all agencies and state governments to remain vigilant and ensure stability.
Concluding his address, Modi called for national unity, stating that collective resolve and coordinated efforts between the government and citizens would help India navigate the ongoing global crisis effectively.
