Dibrugarh, 26th Dec: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming sports from a niche pursuit into a nationwide mass movement while addressing athletes and residents at the Sansad Khel Mahotsav in Dibrugarh.

The Dibrugarh MP said the initiative reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of linking fitness, discipline and youth empowerment with nation-building. He called upon young people to actively participate in building a healthy, fit and sports-oriented India under the spirit of Khelo India.

Sonowal said the Sansad Khel Mahotsav has strengthened grassroots sports by identifying young talent early, fostering community participation and instilling discipline and confidence among youth.

Announcing constituency-level support, the minister said promising sportspersons from Dibrugarh would soon receive targeted incentives and institutional assistance to improve training and compete at higher levels, bringing recognition to Assam and the nation.

Referring to Good Governance Day observed on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary, Sonowal highlighted sports reforms introduced since 2014. He said flagship programmes such as Khelo India, Fit India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme have expanded sports infrastructure, widened participation and created structured pathways for athletes across the country.

He added that Assam has aligned its initiatives with the national vision through Khel Mahotsav, which is identifying talent from villages, tea garden areas and remote regions and preparing them for national and international competitions.

Several state ministers, local representatives and sports administrators were present at the event.
