New Delhi, 7th Sep: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on September 9 to assess the flood-hit regions and review ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures, sources said on Sunday.
Punjab is reeling from one of its worst floods in decades, triggered by heavy rains that left the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi and several seasonal rivulets overflowing. The disaster has so far claimed 46 lives and devastated crops on 1.75 lakh hectares, impacting nearly four lakh people across 1,996 villages in 23 districts.
During his visit, PM Modi is expected to focus on immediate challenges, including removal of silt from fields, disease prevention, and safe disposal of livestock carcasses once floodwaters recede. Strengthening river embankments along the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi and Ghaggar—many of which have weakened due to illegal mining—will also be on the agenda.
The Centre has assured that Punjab will not be left alone in this crisis and is working on short-, medium-, and long-term measures to aid farmers and rebuild infrastructure. Officials confirmed that relief efforts will be jointly undertaken by central and state agencies.
