Guwahati, 20th Dec: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Assam on December 20 and 21, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth around ₹15,600 crore, marking a major boost to the state’s infrastructure, connectivity and agricultural capacity.
On December 20, the Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati at around 3 pm and inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. He will also take a walkthrough of the facility and address a public gathering.
Spread over nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the integrated terminal is designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually. Billed as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, its design draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids”. The terminal incorporates about 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo, Kaziranga-inspired landscapes, japi motifs, rhino symbolism and orchid-themed columns reflecting the Kopou flower. A unique “Sky Forest” with nearly one lakh indigenous plants offers passengers an immersive experience.
The terminal also introduces advanced passenger सुविधाएँ including DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, full-body scanners, automated baggage handling, fast-track immigration and AI-driven airport operations.
On December 21, Prime Minister Modi will pay tribute to martyrs of the Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati. He will then travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh, where he will perform Bhoomipujan for the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited.
The brownfield fertilizer project, to be developed with an investment of over ₹10,600 crore, aims to meet the fertilizer requirements of Assam and neighbouring states, reduce import dependence, generate employment and drive regional economic growth. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a gathering at Namrup.
