Katra, 4th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on June 6, in a landmark trip that promises to redefine the region’s connectivity and development landscape. From flagging off Vande Bharat trains to unveiling the world’s highest rail bridge, the visit is packed with milestone moments for the Union Territory.
At the heart of this visit is the inauguration of the Chenab Rail Bridge, a towering engineering marvel that stands 359 metres above the river — taller than the Eiffel Tower. Spanning 1,315 metres, this steel arch bridge will not only be a feat of global recognition but also a game changer for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, drastically cutting travel time between Katra and Srinagar.
Soon after, PM Modi will inaugurate another national first — the Anji Bridge, India’s maiden cable-stayed railway bridge, built in tough Himalayan terrain. Together, these two bridges reflect India’s engineering prowess and long-term vision for regional integration.
Adding to the day’s significance, the Prime Minister will flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, giving pilgrims, tourists, and locals a swift, modern, and comfortable mode of transport.
Rail Link to Unify Kashmir with the Rest of India
One of the most transformative announcements will be the formal dedication of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) to the nation. This 272-kilometre stretch, built at a cost of nearly ₹43,800 crore, connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through a network of 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. It promises not just improved mobility, but a deeper socio-economic connection for the people of the region.
Roads, Flyovers, and a Medical College to Uplift Local Lives
The Prime Minister’s visit will also focus on improving last-mile connectivity, especially in remote and border areas. Among the key projects: the Rafiabad-Kupwara road widening (NH-701) and Shopian bypass (NH-444). Two major flyovers in Srinagar — at Sangrama and Bemina — will also be inaugurated to decongest city traffic and make commutes smoother.
Healthcare gets a significant boost too. PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, a ₹350-crore medical college in Katra — the first for Reasi district. This project aims to address the region’s healthcare needs and strengthen the local medical infrastructure.
From world-class infrastructure to life-changing healthcare, PM Modi’s June 6 visit to Jammu and Kashmir is being seen as a powerful statement of intent — to connect, develop and empower the region like never before.
