New Delhi, 15th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a mass meeting with the Indian diaspora during his visit to New York for the United Nations summit next month. Scheduled for the week of September 22-28, the meeting will take place at an open-air venue on Long Island, accommodating up to 18,000 attendees.
The gathering will celebrate the achievements of the Indian diaspora in the US and strengthen the people-to-people ties between the two nations. PM Modi will also address the UN General Assembly on September 26 as part of the high-level meetings.
Sources indicate that US politicians will not be invited to the event due to the proximity of the US elections on November 5. This decision aims to avoid any perception of political involvement, recalling a past incident in 2019 when a similar event with then-President Donald Trump led to controversy.
In previous visits, PM Modi has held large rallies, including a notable event at Madison Square Garden in 2014 and a meeting in San Jose the following year. Last year, he participated in the International Day of Yoga at the UN.
While the exact location on Long Island is not confirmed, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow is a likely venue, having hosted World Cup Cricket matches in June.
