Tokyo, 30th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with the Governors of 16 Prefectures of Japan, urging deeper sub-national cooperation to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that India-Japan ties, rooted in centuries-old civilizational bonds, have continued to flourish and now need a renewed push beyond traditional Delhi-Tokyo engagement. He highlighted the State-Prefecture Partnership Initiative launched at the 15th Annual Summit, aimed at boosting cooperation in trade, technology, tourism, skills, security, and culture.

PM Modi encouraged Indian states and Japanese prefectures to leverage each other’s strengths in manufacturing, innovation, start-ups, mobility, SMEs, and next-generation infrastructure. “Each Prefecture in Japan has niche economic and technological strengths, just as Indian states have their own diverse capabilities. Together, we can create powerful synergies,” he said.

The Prime Minister further underlined the importance of youth and skills exchange, noting that combining Japanese technology with Indian talent would open new avenues of growth.

The Governors, in their remarks, acknowledged that sub-national collaboration would be crucial to elevate business, education, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
