PM Modi Pays Condolences to Renowned Archeologist Braj Basi Lal

New Delhi, 10th September. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid his condolences after the demise of renowned archeologist Shri Braj Basi Lal.

PM Modi tweeted, “Shri BB Lal was an outstanding personality. His contributions to culture and archaeology are unparalleled. He will be remembered as a great intellectual who deepened our connect with our rich past. Pained by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Om Shanti.”

 

 

Braj Basi Lal, an archaeologist who led an excavation at the Ramjanmabhoomi site in the mid-1970s and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2021, died on Saturday (September 10) morning.

Between 1968 and 1972, Lal was the director general of the Archaeological Survey of India, and he worked extensively on archaeological sites associated with the Harappan civilisation and the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

He has also served on several UNESCO committees and was honored with the Padma Bhushan by India’s president in 2000.

He is best known for proposing the existence of a temple-like structure beneath the now-demolished Babri mosque.
