New Delhi, 7th Aug: Amid preparations for the Vice-Presidential election, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has unanimously authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President J.P. Nadda to select the coalition’s candidate. The decision was made during a crucial meeting of NDA leaders held on Thursday at the Parliament complex.
The election was necessitated by the resignation of former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing health reasons. His resignation prompted the Election Commission to begin the process for a new election.
The NDA meeting, chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, included key leaders such as Union Ministers Amit Shah, Lalan Singh of Janata Dal (United), Shrikant Shinde of Shiv Sena, L. Sri Krishna Devarayalu of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and Chirag Paswan of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the election schedule, confirming the last date for filing nominations as August 21. The polling, if necessary, will take place on September 9, with the counting of votes also on the same day.
The move to centralize the candidate selection process underscores the NDA’s unified approach to key political decisions. The eventual winner of the election will also assume the powerful role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making the choice a strategic one for the ruling alliance. The NDA’s decision-making process, led by PM Modi and J.P. Nadda, is expected to be swift, with all coalition partners agreeing to abide by their final choice.
