PM Modi Mourns Demise of Padma Shri Awardee and Gussadi Dance Icon Kanaka Raju

New Delhi, 26th Oct. Padma Shri awardee and renowned Gussadi folk dance icon Kanaka Raju, also known as Gussadi Raju, passed away at the age of 84 on Friday due to age-related issues. Kanaka Raju’s final rites are set to take place on Saturday at his native village, Marlawai in Jainoor mandal, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X, highlighting Raju’s enduring influence on cultural heritage. “Saddened by the passing of Shri Kanaka Raju Ji, a prolific dancer and cultural icon. His rich contribution to preserving Gussadi dance will always motivate coming generations,” PM Modi wrote. He added that Raju’s dedication ensured that this important aspect of cultural heritage thrived in its authentic form.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also expressed grief, noting Kanaka Raju’s significant role in introducing the Gussadi dance tradition to a wider audience and preserving Telangana’s folk culture. Calling his passing an “irreparable loss” for the folk arts, the Chief Minister conveyed his sympathies to Raju’s family and announced that his last rites would be conducted with state honors.

Celebrated for his vibrant and expressive performances, Kanaka Raju was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for his remarkable contributions to the arts. His efforts not only brought Gussadi dance to prominence but also inspired future generations to embrace and celebrate this rich tradition. Through performances and workshops, Raju played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Gussadi, a dance form deeply embedded in Telangana’s cultural heritage.
