New Delhi, 9th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a fresh round of meetings with the chiefs of the three services, coming within days of previous consultations, as tensions between India and Pakistan escalated sharply this week to levels not seen in nearly three decades.
The high-level meetings come in the wake of significant military actions initiated by both sides. On Wednesday, India conducted air strikes, dubbed Operation Sindoor, targeting what it described as “terrorist infrastructure” inside Pakistan. This action was a direct response to a deadly attack that killed 26 tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam two weeks prior.
In retaliation, the Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire western border on the intervening night of May 8-9. The Indian Army confirmed on Friday that these attacks were “effectively repulsed.”
Defence officials mentioned the crucial role of the indigenously developed Akash surface-to-air missile air defence system in successfully thwarting Pakistani drone attacks on Indian assets on Thursday. Both the Indian Army and Air Force have reportedly deployed the Akash system along the border with Pakistan.
An official statement from the Indian Army detailed the events: “Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May. Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has also conducted a comprehensive review of the national security scenario with the top military leadership, a day after India successfully repelled Pakistan’s attempts to target its military installations.
In related developments aimed at bolstering preparedness, the central government has empowered the Army Chief to call out “every officer and every enrolled person” of the Territorial Army (TA). This authorization allows the TA to be embodied to provide essential guard duties or to support and supplement the regular Army.
Furthermore, the Centre has directed all states to grant emergency procurement powers to the heads of civil defence authorities, enabling them to make necessary purchases swiftly in case of an emergency situation.
