New Delhi, 14th Aug: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today marked the six-year anniversary of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a flagship initiative that has brought transformative change to millions of households across India. The mission, launched in 2019, has been a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to ensuring access to safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections.

The mission has delivered clean drinking water to more than 15 crore households, significantly improving public health and empowering communities. The Prime Minister noted that the scheme has not only uplifted lives in rural India but has also “significantly strengthened healthcare outcomes,” particularly benefiting women. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that providing safely managed drinking water to all households could prevent nearly 400,000 deaths from diarrheal diseases.

Beyond the numbers, the mission has focused on a community-centric approach. More than 24.80 lakh women have been trained to test water quality using Field Test Kits, making water safety a community-led effort. The reduction in the time and physical burden of fetching water has also allowed women and girls to pursue education and economic opportunities.

The mission, which was initially set to cover all rural households by 2024, has had its deadline extended to 2028. Despite some challenges flagged by a parliamentary panel regarding data authenticity, the government remains committed to its goal of providing sustainable and universal rural tap water supply.
