New Delhi |9th Jan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed his birthday wishes to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, acknowledging his long-standing contribution to India’s diplomacy and his leadership in shaping the country’s foreign policy.
Sharing a message on social media platform X, the Prime Minister described Jaishankar as a seasoned diplomat who continues to play an important role in expanding India’s engagement with the world. He also wished the External Affairs Minister good health and a long life.
Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, born on January 9, 1955, in New Delhi, has been at the helm of India’s foreign policy as External Affairs Minister since 2019. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he brings decades of diplomatic experience to the political arena.
Before joining active politics, Jaishankar spent over 40 years in the Indian Foreign Service. He served as India’s Foreign Secretary between 2015 and 2018 and held several critical overseas postings, including Ambassador to China and Ambassador to the United States, during key phases of India’s bilateral relations.
He comes from a family deeply rooted in public service. His father, K. Subrahmanyam, was a prominent strategic thinker and former government official.
Educated in New Delhi and Bengaluru, Jaishankar is a graduate of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He later completed his master’s degree in political science, followed by an M.Phil. and PhD in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977.
Following his retirement from government service in 2018, Jaishankar briefly worked in the private sector before being inducted into the Union Cabinet. In 2019, he was appointed External Affairs Minister and subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.
