PM Modi Holds First Bilateral Meeting with Mexican President Sheinbaum at G7 Summit

Kananaskis, 18th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President of Mexico, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, marking their first bilateral engagement. Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Sheinbaum on her historic election victory.

During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between India and Mexico and agreed to further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, innovation, science and technology, the automotive industry, and people-to-people exchanges. Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Mexico’s support in India’s fight against terrorism.

The discussions also covered expanding collaboration in pharmaceuticals, with India poised to contribute to affordable, high-quality medicines and health solutions. Near-shoring opportunities in Mexico were also highlighted as a potential avenue for economic cooperation.

President Sheinbaum praised India’s advancements in digital public infrastructure, technology, and innovation. Both leaders emphasized the need to explore new areas of collaboration, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and critical minerals.

They welcomed ongoing engagements between think tanks from both countries and underlined the importance of cultural exchange and tourism. Addressing broader global challenges, the leaders also exchanged views on regional issues and the shared priorities of the Global South.

Prime Minister Modi fondly recalled his 2016 visit to Mexico and extended an invitation to President Sheinbaum to visit India in the near future.
