New Delhi, 12th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed immense pride over the inclusion of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. The recognised heritage consists of 12 historic forts — 11 located in Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu, collectively symbolising the strategic prowess and cultural legacy of the Maratha Empire.
Responding to a post by UNESCO on social media platform X, PM Modi said, “Every Indian is elated with this recognition… The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice.”
Highlighting the enduring relevance of the Maratha legacy, the Prime Minister said it represents good governance, military strength, cultural pride, and social welfare. He urged citizens to visit these forts and delve into the empire’s storied past.
The Prime Minister also reminisced about his 2014 visit to Raigad Fort, a stronghold of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, sharing photographs from the occasion. “Will always cherish that visit,” he added.
The UNESCO recognition comes as a tribute to the Maratha Empire’s unique military architecture, which combined natural landscapes with strategic design to create near-impenetrable bastions. These forts include Raigad, Shivneri, Sindhudurg, and Gingee, among others.
