New Delhi, 8th Feb. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday delivered a heartfelt farewell address to the retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the significance of their contributions and the indelible mark they leave behind.
In his speech, the Prime Minister reflected on the unique character of the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing that while the Lok Sabha experiences change every five years, the Rajya Sabha rejuvenates itself every two years. He likened the biennial farewell ceremony to a transformative experience, leaving behind cherished memories and invaluable legacies for incoming members.
Acknowledging the remarkable tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister hailed his enduring influence on the House and the nation, remarking that his guidance would resonate in every discourse on Indian democracy. He urged all Members of Parliament to draw inspiration from distinguished figures like Dr. Singh, citing his unwavering commitment to duty, even when faced with physical challenges.
Expressing gratitude to the retiring members, the Prime Minister underscored the enriching experience of serving in the Rajya Sabha, likening it to a diverse university of six years, shaped by myriad experiences. He emphasized that departing members would carry forward their learnings to contribute further to the nation-building process.
Reflecting on the historic moment, Prime Minister Modi noted that the departing members had the privilege of witnessing the transition from the old to the new Parliament building, symbolizing the journey of Amrit Kaal and the 75 years of the Constitution.
Praising the resilience of members during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister commended their dedication to upholding parliamentary duties despite unprecedented challenges. He paid tribute to those who lost their lives to the virus, acknowledging the House’s graceful acceptance of adversity and its unwavering commitment to progress.
In a poignant reference to a past incident of wearing black clothes by the opposition, the Prime Minister interpreted it as a symbolic gesture to ward off negativity and evil influences during the nation’s journey towards prosperity.
