New Delhi, 8th Jan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended greetings to the nation on the commencement of Somnath Swabhiman Parv, recalling the enduring civilisational spirit that has kept the Somnath Temple alive in the hearts of millions for over a thousand years.

The Prime Minister noted that Somnath faced its first attack in January 1026, followed by repeated assaults in subsequent centuries. Yet, he said, the eternal faith of devotees and the resolve of Bharat ensured that the temple was rebuilt time and again. “Somnath Swabhiman Parv is about remembering the countless children of Bharat Mata who never compromised with their principles and ethos. However daunting the times were, their resolve remained unshaken and their commitment to our ethos unwavering,” Modi said.

Sharing memories from his previous visits, Modi invited citizens to participate in the celebration by posting their own experiences and photographs using the hashtag #SomnathSwabhimanParv.

The Prime Minister also recalled the historic programme held on October 31, 2001, which marked 50 years since the rebuilt Somnath Temple reopened in 1951 in the presence of then President Dr Rajendra Prasad. He highlighted the pivotal role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, KM Munshi and several others in the reconstruction of the temple. The 2001 programme also coincided with the 125th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel and was attended by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, and other dignitaries.

Looking ahead, Modi noted that 2026 will mark 75 years since the grand rededication ceremony of 1951, describing it as a milestone that symbolises not just the rebuilding of a temple, but the indomitable spirit of Indian civilisation that continues to inspire generations.

In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister shared a Subhashitam praying for the welfare of all citizens and reiterated the significance of Somnath Swabhiman Parv as a tribute to India’s enduring cultural and spiritual heritage.
