Tianjin, 30th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tianjin, China, on Saturday for a two-day visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled for August 31 and September 1. This marks his first trip to China in seven years.
Modi is expected to hold crucial talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, followed by discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 1. The summit brings together leaders from the 10-member bloc at a time when global geopolitics are in flux.
The visit comes amid strained relations between India and the United States. The Trump administration has recently imposed steep tariffs on Indian exports and sanctions linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. Despite these pressures, New Delhi has underscored the need to maintain constructive engagement with Beijing.
Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi was greeted with an enthusiastic reception from the Indian diaspora in Tianjin. The atmosphere was charged with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram.” Sharing his excitement on X, Modi posted: “Landed in Tianjin, China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and meeting various world leaders.”
Among the crowd was a Chinese woman married to an Indian national, who expressed her emotions after meeting Modi. “Today we are very happy to come here to see Modi ji… I am very excited, I almost cried. I love Modi, I love India,” she said.
During his visit, Modi will also attend key SCO sessions, with India expected to highlight regional security, economic cooperation, and connectivity as its priorities. The bilateral talks with Xi and Putin will be closely watched, given the global tensions and India’s delicate balancing act between major powers.
