New Delhi, 7th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his best wishes on National Handloom Day, celebrating India’s rich weaving traditions and their role in the country’s prosperity and livelihoods. In a post on ‘X’, the Prime Minister said, “Today is a day to celebrate our rich weaving traditions, which showcase the creativity of our people. We are proud of India’s handloom diversity and its role in furthering livelihoods and prosperity.”

The celebration of National Handloom Day on August 7 holds historical significance as it commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on this day in 1905. The movement encouraged the use of indigenous products and played a crucial role in the freedom struggle.

The handloom sector is a vital part of the Indian economy, serving as the second-largest source of rural employment after agriculture. This year’s theme for the day is “Handlooms – Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation,” highlighting the sector’s importance in female empowerment, as over 70% of weavers and allied workers are women.

The Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with other organizations, organized various events across the country to mark the occasion. These events included exhibitions, workshops, and awards to honor the contributions of weavers and to promote traditional craftsmanship.
