New Delhi, 29th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Friday presented with a Daruma doll by Rev Seishi Hirose, Chief Priest of the Shorinzan Daruma-Ji temple, Takasaki-Gunma. The gesture reaffirmed the deep civilizational and spiritual bonds between India and Japan.
The Daruma doll, regarded as an auspicious charm of perseverance and good fortune in Japanese culture, traces its legacy to Bodhidharma, an Indian monk from Kancheepuram. Known in Japan as Daruma Daishi, he is believed to have travelled to the country over a thousand years ago.
Takasaki City in Gunma, the birthplace of the famous Daruma dolls, remains a cultural landmark reflecting this enduring connection.
