New Delhi/Singapore, 4th May: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his warm congratulations to Singapore’s newly elected Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) sweeping victory in the general elections. The PAP secured its 14th consecutive mandate, reaffirming its long-standing political dominance in the island nation.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:
“Heartiest congratulations, Lawrence Wong, on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
The People’s Action Party, now under Wong’s leadership, made significant electoral gains compared to the last general elections. The party clinched 87 out of 97 seats in Parliament, marking a strong 65.6% vote share—an increase from 61.2% in 2020. This emphatic win solidifies Wong’s position as the successor to Lee Hsien Loong and paves the way for continued political stability in Singapore.
Wong responded to the support with gratitude, stating in his post on X:
“Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team.”
Strengthening India-Singapore Ties
India and Singapore share a deep-rooted and expanding relationship, elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024. This robust partnership spans key areas such as trade, defence, digital innovation, cybersecurity, fintech, and education.
PM Modi’s outreach to Singapore has been consistent and impactful. Since 2014, he has visited the country five times, participating in bilateral engagements, regional summits, and major international events.
Notably:
- In June 2018, he became the first Indian PM to deliver the keynote address at the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue, a key forum on Asian security.
- In November 2018, he was the first Head of Government to address the Singapore FinTech Festival, reinforcing India’s commitment to global digital leadership.
Looking Ahead
Observers believe that under PM Wong’s leadership, India-Singapore relations will continue to flourish, especially with both nations aligned on areas like digital transformation, maritime security, and regional connectivity.
As strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific, India and Singapore are expected to expand collaborative efforts, ensuring peace, prosperity, and innovation in the region.
