New Delhi, 29th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his congratulations to Indian chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh for her remarkable achievement of winning the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup and simultaneously becoming a Grandmaster.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister lauded her dual feat, stating, “It’s been a phenomenal day for Indian Chess! Divya Deshmukh has not only won the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup but also become a Grandmaster. Congratulations to her.” Shri Modi further added that her accomplishment “will motivate many people and contribute to chess becoming even more popular among the youth.”

Divya Deshmukh, at just 19 years old, secured the prestigious World Cup title by defeating India’s top-ranked player Koneru Humpy in a thrilling all-Indian final held in Batumi, Georgia. This victory also earned Divya her final Grandmaster norm, making her the fourth Indian woman and the 88th Indian overall to achieve the coveted GM title. She entered the tournament as the 15th seed and showcased exceptional skill and composure throughout.

Her triumph in the FIDE Women’s World Cup automatically granted her the Grandmaster title, a less conventional route than accumulating three norms and a 2500 rating. The win has been celebrated across the nation as a testament to the emerging young talent in Indian chess, further solidifying India’s growing presence on the international chess stage.
