Addis Ababa, 17th Dec: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia, the highest civilian award of Ethiopia, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening India–Ethiopia relations and his role as a global statesman.
The honour was presented by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed at a special ceremony held at the Addis International Convention Centre, during Prime Minister Modi’s first bilateral visit to Ethiopia from December 16 to 17, 2025.
Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep humility and gratitude, describing it as a privilege to receive an honour from one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. He thanked Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the people of Ethiopia for the recognition and praised the Ethiopian leader’s efforts towards national unity, sustainability and inclusive development.
Highlighting the importance of knowledge in nation-building, Prime Minister Modi recalled India’s long-standing educational contribution to Ethiopia, noting that Indian teachers have played a role in Ethiopia’s development for over a century.
Dedicating the award to the people of both countries, Prime Minister Modi said it belonged to all Indians and Ethiopians who have nurtured bilateral ties across generations. He conveyed gratitude on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians for the honour bestowed upon him.
The conferment of the award marks a milestone in India–Ethiopia relations and reinforces the shared commitment of both nations to advancing cooperation and strengthening the voice of the Global South on the global stage.
